It is important to keep the contingency plan simple. Everyone within the department must understand the contingency plan, for it to be effective. Contingency planning should be done by each department within a business. It should outline the policies and procedures for the department to follow in the event of a disaster. These procedures should be thorough, and made a part of the overall company business continuity plan. It is the responsibility of the department to see that everyone in the department is aware of and more importantly understands the contingency plan, and their role in that plan.
The company's business continuity work group should not develop the plans for each department. The departments themselves are in a better position to create the plans and submit them to the group. The BC group can then point out concerns, address issues, and successfully refine the plan together with appropriate department managers.
Business continuity software is available that many businesses find helpful when developing the contingency features of a solid business continuity plan.
It is always easier to think that it is not going to happen... However, what if disaster does strike? Developing contingencies is easier and more effective before a disaster strikes. History shows that recovering from a disaster is much more likely if the business has done the proper business continuity planning, and has identified risks and made the contingency plans.
Ask any company that has survived a disaster about the need for contingency planning… I’m sure you can guess their answer! Contingency plans are important. The future of the company could depend on the planning done now outlining the contingencies. Don’t put it off…
