Business continuity is focused on keeping businesses up and running even when faced with difficulties such as data loss and system failures. While these concerns are most common and require the most day to day attention, disaster recovery business continuity is another area where businesses must have adequate planning. And when it comes to protecting a business from disasters processes such as network security and data backup are not enough.
Business continuity and disaster recovery planning involves taking the time to consider how natural disasters and other emergencies will affect a business’s operations. These disasters can include fire, tornados, floods, hurricanes, and other events that can have catastrophic effects on a business. One question is where data can be stored that will keep it safe from total destruction of a building or area. Another question is how a company will conduct business if its building and equipment are damaged or destroyed. These may seem like far off issues that don’t need a lot of attention, but disasters are by their nature likely to cause extreme continuity disruption. The also create a huge challenge for businesses when it comes to recovering from the affects these disasters have. If not properly protected, recovery may take years or it may never fully happen at all.
The bottom line is that regardless of how much of a risk businesses feel they have for certain disasters it is better to plan ahead for how to recover from such disasters rather than risk unnecessarily losing a business.
