As the number of wireless network users grows, the business continuity plans of companies are increasing their focus on wireless security. These companies are caught between the added productivity that wireless access adds and the added security risks this same wireless access brings with it. In order to combat the security threat of wireless access most routers and servers employee a firewall security system.
A firewall program contributes to the security of wireless transmissions by monitoring and controlling traffic in and out of a wireless network router. Before a router delivers the network packets that pass through it, the firewall program examines the packets and decides if they are secure enough to pass on to their intended destination or not. This allows for a more secure transmission from the network and controls against unauthorized access from outside the wireless network.
While a firewall provides a substantial amount of protection against unauthorized access, there is always the security risk that a virus or other destructive transmission will enter into a wireless network. No matter how much faith a company has in the security capabilities of their firewall, it is important to have backup software that allows systems to be restored to their original state should they be corrupted by one of these transmissions.
