Small Business Plan - Develop Before You Do Anything

Many, if not most entrepreneurs rush out and buy their bank checks, buy their business cards online, and yes, I’ve even seen some go as far as writing business checks for things like server disaster recovery software before they’ve written their small business plan.  Laugh if you want to, but it’s true.  Without a plan and a direction nine out of 10 small businesses fail.  Planning is the most important ingredient for a business of any size, small or large!

Fail to plan, and you plan to fail.  For many smaller businesses, and undercapitalized entrepreneurs, planning is looked at as a luxury they simply can’t afford and don't have time to focus on.  Businesses, especially smaller businesses get caught up in the day to day busy work of keeping the business in operation and can’t see the big picture needs.  They are literally blind to the need for small business planning.

Even the smallest business should have a plan for disasters

Starting a small business usually begins with small business ideas many of which if put through the process of developing a serious business plan would never be launched.  The research focused on the business plans shows the pitfalls before you write the business check that starts the whirlwind of panic most entrepreneurs find themselves in.  It is much better to understand all of the possibilities before you find yourself starting a small business!  However, once you have completed the research, and once you have a solid plan for the smaller business, then it is time to roll up the sleeves, put on the blinders, and start writing those business checks!  You will know how long you need to survive before you can count on banking those checks!  You will have a plan for whatever is thrown the way and you will be better equipped to dodge and when necessary, handle the disasters that find every new startup business!   Solid business continuity planning can make big disasters small problems!
