Companies are becoming increasingly dependant upon wireless networks to conduct day to day business. Many employees have laptops they can take just about anywhere and connect to wireless networks in a variety of places. They can connect to their internal company networks to transmit data back and forth. They can also use these wireless connections to find information on the web to help them in their business efforts. With this increased use of such wireless networks, there is also a need for increased wireless network security.
Wireless security comes in a few main forms. Firewall security programs help monitor and control connections to and from an employee’s laptop and wireless network. These security programs can also control the information that gets passed through these wireless communications. Harmful or potentially harmful data is stopped before it can breach a company’s internal network. Laptops are also protected from incoming wireless signals that may be trying to make an unauthorized connection.
Another reason network security is so important is that many wirelessly connected computers use online backup methods to keep copies of data. Business continuity plans call for this type of backup, but they also acknowledge the risks involved with transmitting data through these wireless connections. Programs such as firewalls help a company keep its networks and data secure.
